IIF (Intuit® Interchange Format) is a text-based file format used by QuickBooks® Desktop to import and export transactions, lists, and other financial data.
IIF files are tab-delimited text files that QuickBooks® Desktop uses to transfer data between QuickBooks® company files or from external sources. The format was developed by Intuit® as a way to batch import data without manual entry.
While newer formats like QBO (OFX) exist for QuickBooks® Online, IIF remains the primary import format for QuickBooks® Desktop versions including Pro, Premier, and Enterprise.
Uses tab characters to separate fields, making it easy to edit in spreadsheet software
Each section starts with a header row defining the column structure
Can contain multiple transaction types in a single file
Automatically maps to existing QuickBooks® accounts or creates new ones
An IIF file consists of header rows (starting with !) followed by data rows. Here's an example structure:
!TRNS TRNSID TRNSTYPE DATE ACCNT AMOUNT MEMO !SPL SPLID TRNSTYPE DATE ACCNT AMOUNT MEMO !ENDTRNS TRNS GENERAL JOURNAL 01/15/2024 Checking -500.00 Office Supplies SPL GENERAL JOURNAL 01/15/2024 Office Expense 500.00 Office Supplies ENDTRNS TRNS GENERAL JOURNAL 01/20/2024 Checking 1000.00 Client Payment SPL GENERAL JOURNAL 01/20/2024 Accounts Receivable -1000.00 Client Payment ENDTRNS
Note: Each transaction in an IIF file must balance to zero. The TRNS and SPL lines work together to create a double-entry journal entry.
IIF format is supported by all QuickBooks® Desktop editions:
2019 - 2024
2019 - 2024
All versions
Important: QuickBooks® Online does not support IIF imports. Use QBO/OFX format for QuickBooks® Online.
