How to Clean a Bank CSV File for QuickBooks®

Bank CSV files are rarely in a format that QuickBooks® can directly import. Most banks add extra header rows, footer summaries, split transactions across multiple columns, and use inconsistent date formats. The Bank CSV Cleaner solves these problems automatically.

Common Problems with Bank CSV Files

• Extra metadata rows — Banks like Chase and Bank of America include account information, date ranges, and other data above the actual transaction headers.
• Split Debit/Credit columns — Instead of one “Amount” column, many banks use separate “Debit” and “Credit” columns (Citi, Capital One, PNC, TD Bank).
• Inconsistent date formats — Different banks use MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD, or even text dates like “Jan 15, 2024”.
• Currency symbols and formatting — Amounts may include $, commas, parentheses for negatives, or European formatting (1.234,56).
• Summary rows — Footer rows with “Total”, “Balance”, or “Ending Balance” can confuse import tools.
