A Chart of Accounts (COA) is the complete list of all accounts used by a business to categorize financial transactions. It organizes income, expenses, assets, liabilities, and equity into a structured format for accurate bookkeeping.
IIF (Intuit® Interchange Format) files are used for QuickBooks® Desktop imports and support account numbers, types, and hierarchy. CSV files are used for QuickBooks® Online and other accounting software like Xero, Sage, and Wave.
Go to File > Utilities > Import > IIF Files in QuickBooks® Desktop. Select the downloaded IIF file and click Import. All accounts will be created automatically. Always back up your company file before importing.
In QuickBooks® Online, go to Settings > Import Data > Chart of Accounts. Upload the CSV file and map the columns. QuickBooks® will create all accounts from your file.

A well-organized Chart of Accounts (COA) is the foundation of your business accounting. It determines how transactions are categorized, what reports you can generate, and ultimately how well you can track your business's financial health. Our free Chart of Accounts Generator helps you create a professional COA for either QuickBooks® Desktop or QuickBooks® Online in minutes. Export as IIF for Desktop (import-ready for our IIF Viewer) or CSV for Online.
A Chart of Accounts is a complete listing of every account in your company's general ledger. These accounts are organized into five main categories:
Resources your business owns: cash, receivables, equipment, inventory
Debts your business owes: payables, loans, credit cards
Owner's stake in the business: capital, retained earnings
Money earned: sales revenue, service income, interest
Costs of running business: rent, payroll, supplies, marketing, utilities
QuickBooks® Desktop and QuickBooks® Online use different file formats for importing data. Desktop uses the IIF (Intuit Interchange Format) while Online uses CSV. Need to import transactions too? Use our CSV to QBO Converter for Online or our CSV to IIF Converter for Desktop.
