What is the OFX Format?
OFX (Open Financial Exchange) is an industry-standard data format originally developed by Microsoft, Intuit, and CheckFree in 1997. It uses SGML-based markup (similar to HTML) to represent financial transactions, account information, and balance data. The format has become the universal language for exchanging financial data between banks, brokerages, and personal finance software.
OFX files contain structured transaction data including dates, descriptions, amounts, transaction types (debit/credit), and unique identifiers (FITIDs) that prevent duplicate imports. This structure makes OFX far more reliable than CSV for importing transactions into accounting software.
Why Convert CSV to OFX?
While CSV is a simple, universal format, it lacks the structure that financial software needs for reliable imports. OFX provides account type identification, transaction deduplication via FITIDs, and standardized date/amount formatting that eliminates import errors.
Many banks provide CSV downloads but don't offer OFX/QFX exports. Converting your bank CSV to OFX lets you import transactions cleanly into QuickBooks®, Quicken, or any financial software that supports the OFX standard. Need QBO format instead? Try our CSV to QBO Converter.
Understanding Column Mapping
Every bank formats its CSV exports differently. Chase might put the date in column A and the description in column B, while Bank of America uses completely different column names and ordering. Column mapping is the process of telling our converter which CSV column contains each piece of transaction data.
Our CSV to OFX converter automatically detects common column names like “Date”, “Description”, “Amount”, “Credit”, and “Debit”. If your bank uses non-standard headers, you can manually select the correct column for each field using the dropdown menus. The tool also supports banks that use separate credit and debit columns instead of a single amount column.
Optional fields like Memo and Check Number can also be mapped if your bank provides them. These fields are included in the OFX output as MEMO and CHECKNUM tags, which some accounting software uses for additional categorization.
OFX Compatibility with Financial Software
The OFX format is supported by an extensive range of financial software. Our converter generates OFX v1.02 (SGML-based) files, which have the broadest compatibility across both modern and legacy applications. Here's how to import OFX files into popular software:
QuickBooks® Desktop: Go to File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files, select your .ofx file, and choose the target bank account.
QuickBooks® Online: Navigate to Banking → Upload Transactions, select your bank account, and upload the OFX file. QBO format may be preferred — see our CSV to QBO Converter.
Quicken: Go to File → Import → OFX/QFX File, browse to your .ofx file, and map it to the correct account.
Sage 50 / Peachtree: Use the Import Bank Statement feature under Maintain → Bank Feeds to import OFX transaction data.
GnuCash: File → Import → Import OFX/QFX provides native support for OFX files.
Supported Date and Amount Formats
Our converter handles multiple date formats commonly used by US and international banks: MM/DD/YYYY, MM-DD-YYYY, YYYY-MM-DD, YYYY/MM/DD, and 2-digit years (MM/DD/YY). For amounts, the tool automatically strips currency symbols ($, EUR, GBP, JPY), commas, and spaces. Parenthesized negative values like (123.45) are correctly interpreted as -123.45.
Banks that separate credits and debits into different columns are fully supported. Simply toggle the split-column option and map each column independently. The converter calculates the correct signed amount for each transaction automatically.
