Contact SupportIt converts bank statement files from multiple formats — QBO, OFX, QFX, IIF, QIF, CSV, MT940, CAMT.053, and XLSX — into a Sage Accounting-compatible CSV file that you can import directly into Sage 50, Sage Business Cloud, or Sage Intacct via their bank statement import feature.
Why Convert QBO Files to Sage?
QBO (QuickBooks Web Connect) is the standard bank download format used by QuickBooks Online and many US banks. When you switch from QuickBooks to Sage Accounting, your bank may still export transaction files in QBO format — but Sage cannot read QBO files directly. Sage 50, Sage Business Cloud, and Sage Intacct all require CSV-formatted bank statements for their bank import feature, which means you need a reliable way to convert QBO to Sage CSV.
PrimeConnect's free QBO to Sage converter solves this problem instantly. Upload your QBO file and the tool parses every transaction — including dates, payee names, amounts, memo fields, and reference numbers — then outputs a properly formatted CSV file that Sage can import without errors. The entire process runs in your browser with zero server involvement, so your financial data stays 100% private.
Understanding the QBO File Format
A QBO file is essentially an OFX (Open Financial Exchange) document with a .qbo extension. Inside, it uses an SGML/XML structure to store bank statement data:
- <STMTTRN> — Each transaction block contains a type code (DEBIT, CREDIT, CHECK, etc.), posting date, transaction amount, payee name, and optional memo/reference fields.
- <DTPOSTED> — The transaction date in YYYYMMDD format (e.g., 20240115 for January 15, 2024). Our converter reformats this into Sage's preferred DD/MM/YYYY, MM/DD/YYYY, or YYYY-MM-DD format.
- <TRNAMT> — The signed transaction amount. Negative values indicate debits (money out), positive values indicate credits (money in). Sage accepts both signed amounts and separate Money In/Money Out columns.
- <NAME> and <MEMO> — The payee name and additional description text. Our converter combines these into a single Description column for Sage.
QuickBooks to Sage Migration Guide
Migrating from QuickBooks to Sage is a common transition for businesses that need more advanced inventory management, multi-currency support, or UK/EU-centric features. The biggest challenge during migration is moving your historical transaction data. Here's how to handle it:
- Export bank transactions from QuickBooks — In QuickBooks Online, go to Banking and export your transactions as a QBO file. In QuickBooks Desktop, you can export as IIF or use our IIF to Sage converter for that format.
- Convert QBO to Sage CSV — Upload the QBO file to this converter. Select 3-column or 4-column format and choose your date format to match your Sage regional settings.
- Import into Sage — In Sage Business Cloud, navigate to Banking → Import Statement → CSV. In Sage 50, go to Bank Accounts → Statement → Import. Confirm the date format when prompted and review the preview before completing the import.
- Verify and reconcile — After import, compare totals between QuickBooks and Sage to ensure all transactions transferred correctly. Use our Duplicate Detector to check for any duplicated entries.
Which Sage Editions Support CSV Bank Import?
All major Sage products accept CSV bank statement imports, but the exact import location and supported column formats vary slightly:
- Sage Business Cloud Accounting — Supports both 3-column (Date, Description, Amount) and 4-column (Date, Description, Money In, Money Out) CSV layouts. Import via Banking → select account → Import Statement.
- Sage 50 (Sage 50cloud Accounts) — Supports CSV import through the Bank Statement wizard. Allows column mapping during import, making it flexible with different CSV structures.
- Sage Intacct — Enterprise-grade accounting with CSV import through the bank reconciliation module. Supports custom field mapping and batch imports.
- Sage 200 — Supports CSV bank imports through the Cash Book module. Requires Date, Reference, Description, and Amount columns.
Common QBO to Sage Conversion Issues
- Date format mismatch — QBO files store dates in YYYYMMDD format. Sage needs DD/MM/YYYY (UK) or MM/DD/YYYY (US). Our converter handles this transformation automatically based on your chosen format.
- Missing payee names — Some bank QBO exports have sparse <NAME> fields. The converter uses <MEMO> as a fallback when the payee name is empty, ensuring you never have blank descriptions in Sage.
- Currency symbols in amounts — Sage expects plain numeric amounts without currency symbols or thousands separators. The converter strips these automatically.
- Duplicate transactions after re-import — If you import the same QBO file twice, Sage may create duplicates. Use our Duplicate Transaction Detector before re-importing to identify overlapping date ranges.
