IIF Double-Entry Structure

IIF uses a TRNS/SPL/ENDTRNS double-entry structure. Each transaction produces two accounting entries:

  • TRNS: Primary entry in your bank account (the amount as-is)
  • SPL: Offsetting entry in the expense or income account (negated amount)
  • ENDTRNS: Delimiter between transactions

Check numbers are preserved as DOCNUM in the IIF output, ensuring they appear in your QuickBooks register for reconciliation.

Import IIF into QuickBooks Desktop

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop (Pro, Premier, or Enterprise)
  2. Go to File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files
  3. Browse to your downloaded .iif file and click Open
  4. QuickBooks imports the transactions to the specified accounts
  5. Review the imported transactions in your bank register

Tip: Make sure the bank account and expense account names in the IIF file match accounts in your QuickBooks chart of accounts. If they don't exist, QuickBooks will create them.
