Understanding IIF Format

IIF (Intuit Interchange Format) is a tab-separated file format designed specifically for QuickBooks Desktop. Each transaction consists of three parts:

  • TRNS: The primary entry (bank account, amount)
  • SPL: The offsetting entry (expense/income account, negated amount)
  • ENDTRNS: End-of-transaction marker

This double-entry structure ensures every debit has a corresponding credit, maintaining balanced books after import.

Import IIF into QuickBooks Desktop

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop (Pro, Premier, or Enterprise)
  2. Go to File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files
  3. Browse to your downloaded .iif file
  4. Click Open to start the import
  5. Review imported transactions in the bank register

Important: The account names in the IIF file must match existing accounts in your QuickBooks chart of accounts. If they don't exist, QuickBooks will create them automatically.
