Fulfillment Fee

A per-unit fee charged by Amazon FBA or similar services for picking, packing, and shipping an order. The fee varies by item size, weight, and whether the product is standard or oversize.

Understanding Fulfillment Fee

A fulfillment fee is the per-unit charge that Amazon FBA (or a similar third-party logistics provider) charges for picking an item from the warehouse shelf, packing it, and shipping it to the customer. The fee amount depends on the item's size tier (small standard, large standard, small oversize, etc.) and its shipping weight.

Amazon updates its FBA fee schedule annually (typically effective January or February), and fees have generally trended upward over time. The fee structure also includes surcharges for items that are heavy, bulky, or require special handling. Apparel items have a slightly different fee structure than non-apparel.

Fulfillment fees are distinct from storage fees (which are monthly charges for warehouse space) and referral fees (which are the sales commission). Together, these three fee types make up the majority of Amazon selling costs for FBA sellers.

Why It Matters for Ecommerce

Fulfillment fees directly impact per-unit profitability and should be a key factor in product selection and pricing decisions. A product that looks profitable on paper may become unprofitable once FBA fulfillment fees are factored in — especially for low-priced, heavy, or oversized items where the fee represents a large percentage of the selling price.

Practical Example

A small standard-size item (under 1 lb) has an FBA fulfillment fee of approximately $3.22. A large standard-size item (2 lbs) costs about $5.90. If both sell for $20, the small item retains 83.9% of its price after fulfillment, while the large item retains only 70.5%. This difference can mean the large item is unprofitable after other fees and COGS.
