A complete guide to importing IIF files into QuickBooks® Desktop, with troubleshooting tips and best practices.
Launch QuickBooks® Desktop and open the company file where you want to import the transactions.
Tip: Make sure you're logged in as the Admin user for full import permissions.
Go to the File menu and select the import option:
File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files...In the file browser dialog, navigate to where you saved your IIF file and select it. Click "Open" to begin the import.
QuickBooks® will display a confirmation message showing how many transactions were imported. Click "OK" to complete the process.
Success! Your transactions have been imported into QuickBooks®.
Go to your bank account register or run a transaction report to verify all transactions were imported correctly with the right dates, amounts, and accounts.

Note: QuickBooks® Online does not support IIF file imports. For QBO, use the QBO/OFX format option in our converter.
Cause: The IIF file may have formatting issues or unsupported characters.
Fix: Re-export the file from our converter. Ensure the file has a .iif extension.
Cause: The account names in the IIF don't match your Chart of Accounts.
Fix: QuickBooks® will create new accounts automatically. You can merge them later or use exact names.
Cause: The debits and credits in a transaction don't equal zero.
Fix: This usually means the IIF file has an error. Try regenerating with our tool.
Cause: Transactions may have imported to a different date range.
Fix: Check your date filters in the register. Expand the date range to "All".
Create a backup of your company file before importing any transactions.
Import a small batch first to verify everything looks correct.
Match account names exactly to avoid creating duplicate accounts.
Always verify imported transactions in your register or reports.
