A step-by-step tutorial for converting your bank's QBO or OFX files to IIF format for QuickBooks® Desktop.
Most banks offer QBO or OFX file downloads through their online banking portal. Here's how to find them:
Log in → Select Account → Download Account Activity → Choose "Quicken or QuickBooks® (QBO)"
Log in → Accounts → Download → Select "QuickBooks®" format
Log in → Account Activity → Download → Choose "Web Connect" or "OFX"
Log in → Transactions → Download → Select "QuickBooks®" option
Tip: Look for options labeled "Web Connect", "QuickBooks®", "QBO", or "OFX". These are all compatible with our converter.
Once you have your QBO or OFX file, upload it to our converter:
Navigate to our QBO to IIF Converter page
Drag and drop your .qbo or .ofx file, or click to browse
The file is parsed instantly in your browser
Security Note: Your file is processed entirely in your browser. No data is uploaded to any server — your financial information stays on your computer.
Before converting, configure the account names that will be used in QuickBooks®:
Enter the exact name of your bank account as it appears in your QuickBooks® Chart of Accounts. For example: "Chase Checking", "Business Savings", or "Operating Account".
Choose where expenses will be categorized by default. You can use a catch-all like "Uncategorized Expense" or "Ask My Accountant", then recategorize in QuickBooks® later.
Important: Account names must match exactly with your QuickBooks® Chart of Accounts. If an account doesn't exist, QuickBooks® will create it during import.
Review the parsed transactions and select which ones to include:
Tip: Exclude transactions you've already entered in QuickBooks® to avoid duplicates.
Once you've configured settings and selected transactions:
The converter generates your IIF file
Choose a location you can easily find, like your Desktop
Open the .iif file in a text editor to spot-check the content
To import your IIF file into QuickBooks® Desktop:
Make sure you're in single-user mode
Select File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files
Browse to and select the downloaded .iif file
Check the imported transactions in your register
Best Practice: Before importing, create a backup of your company file. Go to File → Back Up Company → Create Local Backup.
